Experiencing History with The Fort de Chartres Marines

August 8th 10am-4pm

Join the Fort de Chartres French Marine Reenactment Group on August 8th from 10 AM to 4 PM for a full day of living history.

Experience what life was like at Fort de Chartres during the 18th century as reenactors bring the site’s French colonial past to life.

Built in 1753 during France’s colonization of the Illinois Country, Fort de Chartres was the fourth and final fort constructed in the region—preceded by three earlier wooden structures, the first dating back to 1720. This impressive stone fort served as the French seat of government and the primary military post in Upper Louisiana from 1753 until 1765.

Throughout the day, French Marines will inhabit the fort, demonstrating drills, interacting with visitors, offering informal tours, and answering questions about the site and the soldiers who once lived and served there. It’s an immersive opportunity to step into the world of the mid‑18th century and explore one of Illinois’ most significant historic landmarks.
