History Comes Alive at Fort Cavendish (Fort de Chartres)
Saturday, July 11th, 10am-4pm
See history come to life at Fort Cavendish (Fort de Chartres).
On July 11th from 10am–4pm, living‑history reenactors will portray the 42nd Highlanders, Stirling Co, one of the most storied regiments in the British Army. Their presence reflects the period after the French and Indian War, when the British took control of Fort de Chartres in 1765 as part of the Treaty of Paris.
During the British occupation, the fort served as the military and administrative center for the Illinois Country. The 42nd Highlanders—also known as the Black Watch—were among the units stationed throughout the region to establish British authority, maintain peace with local tribes, and manage the transition from French to British rule. Their distinctive tartan, disciplined drills, and unique Highland traditions made them a memorable presence on the frontier.
Visitors will have the chance to see demonstrations of 18th‑century military life, musket drills, camp routines, and the daily experiences of soldiers living far from home in a rugged and culturally diverse territory. The Heart of Illinois Country Heritage will also be open for shopping during the event.
